What Happens Before A White Filling?

At The Modern Dentist, before recommending a filling, we assess the tooth for signs of decay, wear, or damage, and examine any existing fillings for deterioration around their edges or cracks.

Where appropriate, we take X-rays to check the depth of the decay and how close it sits to the nerve.

This helps determine whether a simple filling is the right treatment, or whether the tooth would be better restored with something stronger, like an onlay, particularly if the damage is extensive.

What Happens During The Procedure?

When you return for the filling, the first step is making sure you're comfortable.

We usually numb the area with a local anaesthetic, and topical numbing gel is used beforehand to make the injection more comfortable.

A white filling usually does require an injection, in the same way an amalgam filling would.

Once the area is numb, we use rubber dam isolation, which is a protective rubber sheet with holes punched in it that keeps the tooth dry and free from saliva during bonding.

This is essential for a strong bond, and it also protects the surrounding gums and gum line from irritation during treatment.

Where we're replacing an old amalgam filling, which contains mercury, the rubber dam adds extra protection during removal and prevents swallowing or inhalation of mercury and other particles.

We then remove any decay and prepare the tooth for the restoration.

How Is The White Filling Placed?

To match the colour, we compare your natural tooth and other teeth against a shade guide under natural light, since colour can change significantly depending on lighting.

Some composites also come in multiple layers of shade and translucency, which lets us build up a filling that mimics the way light passes through real enamel rather than one flat colour.

Once you're happy with the shade, the composite is built up in layers to recreate the tooth's natural shape and anatomy.

The aim is to restore the tooth to its natural form, so the result looks and feels as though it hasn’t been restored at all.
