Dr. Mark Flynn Explains The Modern Smile
If you’ve spent any time looking at cosmetic dentistry on social media and dental websites, you’ll often see results that just don’t look right on someone’s face.
The individual teeth might look okay close-up, but the whole picture just looks wrong.
At The Modern Dentist, we believe that if we’re going to alter someone’s smile, our patients need to know what they’re getting BEFORE the final treatment.
If you’ve watched dentists plastering composite onto teeth freehand and trying to sculpt it, that’s not what we do.

The Modern Smile™ process at The Modern Dentist solves this by using a detailed, design-led approach that prioritises natural harmony and patient involvement.
Through professional photography, digital smile design, 3D modelling, and a realistic “test drive,” patients can see and refine their new smile before any final work is done.
This meticulous process eliminates guesswork, ensures facial balance, and creates predictable, natural-looking results that genuinely suit each individual.

Our process involves meticulous planning and communication between us, our labs and you, our patient.
It begins with a thorough analysis of your smile – not just your teeth; but your whole smile.
Again, if you look at lots of smile makeovers online, you’ll see that you don’t really see the patient properly smile.
You might see a grimace but not a proper, eyes-creasing up, happy-looking smile.
Without this, it’s impossible to plan properly.
We need to see where your lips are, for example, when you’re really smiling, and how much gum and tooth you show.

Our first step is to take a series of photos in our professional photography studio.
Having photos of this quality is essential for proper analysis and planning.
Using both Photoshop and dental imaging software, we go through a process of working out exactly how we want your new teeth to look.
This includes length, thickness, proportions and character, among other things.
There’s a perfect incisor length for every individual patient: too long and they look like rabbit teeth, but too short and it’s barely worth doing.
Same thing applies for the other factors: too much volume and they look horsey.
Too square and they look too masculine for the face or too round and they look too feminine.

Once we’ve worked out what changes we want to make, then we send our designs to one of our labs to turn your design into a 3D model.
Next is probably the most important step of all.
We transfer this model to the patient's mouth in a very aesthetic material that allows them to see our designs in their mouth in a very realistic way.
BUT…

We don’t just give you a mirror because people really aren’t good at evaluating aesthetics by looking in a mirror.
For one thing, they’re seeing a mirror image, not what everyone else sees.
But they also won’t tend to smile naturally; they’ll pull their lips back to examine the individual teeth, which isn't really helpful.
So… we go back into our professional photo studio, take another series of photos, and get that patient to laugh, smile, and really show off their new teeth.
Then we examine the photos together.
When you see these photos in really high quality, you can see immediately if something is off, or if it’s perfect.
If something’s off, then it’s our job to work out what it is, because the patients often won’t be able to articulate it.

If it’s not right, then we work out the changes we want to make and go back to the drawing board and start the process again.
Only when we get this test drive process right will we proceed to the final, definitive treatment.
And only at this point do we make the final decision with the patient on whether we’re going to use hand-sculpted, layered composite, injection moulding composite, or porcelain veneers.
What people usually don’t realise is that the differences between these materials actually make way less difference to the final result than this truly essential design process.
